In this blog post, we will explore the essential steps and valuable tips to set you on your journey to becoming a successful online life coach.
If you’re curious about how to become a certified life coach and are ready to take the plunge, you’ve come to the right place!
1. Know Yourself, Grow Yourself
Alright, before you start inspiring others, let’s dive into some self-discovery time. Reflect on what makes you unique – your strengths, quirks, passions, and what makes you tick! Understanding yourself is like finding the secret ingredient to your coaching magic, so embrace it.
In fact, the first module on my Virtual Coach Academy program focuses on mindset shifts based on neurology and intuition, A.K.A neuro-business coaching. Here you will learn how to truly build new habits, identify your purpose, reinforce the “I can do it all” mindset and I’ll give you a bonus calendar structure. Enroll today here!
2. Obtain the Necessary Training and Certification
While getting a certification is not mandatory, I highly recommend you have on!
Credentials are undeniably important in showcasing your qualifications for a job or validating the value of your products and services. However, knowledge and experience hold equal significance. With ample online resources available, you can easily find the courses and certifications necessary to embark on your professional journey. To gain accreditation in the coaching industry, it’s crucial to ensure that your certification aligns with the standards set by the ICF accrediting body, which establishes ethical coaching guidelines. (International Coach Federation certification.)
When I set out on this path, I devoted considerable time to researching ways to obtain certifications, enabling me to start my practice promptly. Based on my thorough research, I’ve identified three key factors that will greatly assist you in optimizing your certification pursuit and ensuring success.
Firstly, prioritize certifications that are board approved, as they carry more weight and credibility in the industry. Secondly, seek certifications that count as continued education, ensuring you stay updated and relevant in your field. Lastly, opt for programs with well-rounded curriculum, providing you with comprehensive knowledge and skills.
When selecting a certification, it’s essential to choose one that aligns best with your unique skills and goals. Additionally, don’t merely focus on studying but actively put your learning into practice. Supplement your studies with extra reading materials, podcasts, and seek opportunities to connect with other students and instructors through groups or communities just like the Virtual Coach Academy.
Upon obtaining your certification, you’ll feel empowered to start your business. Consider working with 3-5 practice clients initially, offering them a chance to experience your services and potentially become loyal customers. This stage will allow you to learn, adapt, and discover what works best for your clients. Embrace mistakes as valuable learning experiences, as they contribute to your growth along the learning curve.
3. Find Your Coaching Niche
Life coaching is a broad field, and defining your niche will help you stand out in the competitive online coaching market. Focus on an area where you have expertise or a strong interest, such as career coaching, relationship coaching, wellness coaching, or stress management. A clear niche will attract your target audience and make your marketing efforts more effective.
4. Let’s Get Digital – Build an online presence
Establishing a strong online presence is crucial for any online coach.
Start by creating a professional website that showcases your expertise, coaching services, and testimonials. Leverage the power of social media platforms to reach a wider audience. Engage with your followers by sharing valuable content, hosting live sessions, and participating in relevant online communities.
Also, I strongly recommend to “not keep all your eggs in the same basket”. It’s essential to spread your content across various platforms to cater to your audience’s preferences and reach new followers. Each platform offers unique opportunities for engagement and expression, so don’t limit yourself to just one!
Expanding your strategy allows you to target the right clients in line with your brand. Explore options you may have never thought about like podcasts, Twitter, pinterest, linkedin and blogs. Podcasts, in particular, offer a fantastic way to connect with your audience and collaborate with industry influencers. By tapping into new platforms, you increase your exposure, expand your reach, and tap into diverse audiences.
5. Share Free Goodies and Valuable Content!
Before clients commit to working with you, they need to trust your expertise. Offering free resources and valuable content is an excellent way to build that trust. Create blog posts, videos, webinars, or downloadable guides on topics related to your coaching niche. This not only demonstrates your knowledge but also provides a taste of what potential clients can expect from your coaching services.

6. Develop a Coaching Framework
Craft a well-defined coaching framework that outlines your coaching process, methodologies, and goals. A structured approach will give your clients clarity on what to expect during their coaching journey with you. Tailor your coaching sessions to meet each client’s individual needs while adhering to the overarching framework.
Moreover, the Virtual Coach Academy program covers the AIDA marketing method, which stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. This powerful approach helps you understand how to effectively grab your audience’s attention, spark interest in what you have to offer, create a desire for your products or services, and ultimately drive action towards a purchase or conversion.
Additionally, various life coaching pricing structures exist, such as hourly or package rates. Among these options, I highly recommend the package rate approach. Setting a starting point of $xxx for a three-month package proves beneficial as it emphasizes delivering results rather than focusing on the number of hours involved. This approach is far more appealing to potential clients, making it an attractive choice for life coaches.
7. Leverage Online Platforms and Tools
The online world offers a lot of tools and platforms that can streamline your coaching practice. Use video conferencing software for virtual coaching sessions (I like to use zoom and Webinarjam), online scheduling tools for booking appointments (like Asana, Google Calendar, Slack) and project management systems to keep track of your client’s progress.
8. Team Up – Network and Collaborate!
Connect with other life coaches and professionals in related fields. Networking and collaborating can open doors to new opportunities, provide valuable insights, and create a supportive community for your coaching career. I’ve done a number of podcast collabs in my podcast show “Disconnect to Connect” with fellow coaches I admire in the industry like: Anna Kloots, Julie Solomon, Susie Moore and with my VCA clients who have already joined the coaching party! Like Anaïs Skoutariotis.
Attend virtual conferences, join coaching forums, and consider co-hosting webinars with other experts. Lucky for you, if you missed my free webinar “From Passion Project to Thriving Business”, it is already up on my platform for you to watch! Click here.
